Power Purchasing Agreements – What is it
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is an arrangement in which a solar service provider designs, builds, owns, operates, monitors, and maintains a photo voltaic (PV) system, and a customer agrees to site the system on its roof or else where on its property and purchase the system’ electric output from the solar services provider for a pre determined period and price.

The purchase price of the generated electricity is typically below the retail electricity rate that the host customer would otherwise pay to the irretailer. The PPA rates can be fixed or they can contain an annual price escalator in the range of 2% to 4%.

The term length of most PPAs can range from 10 years to as long as 25 years.

PPA arrangements enable the customer to avoid many of the traditional barriers to the installation of solar systems.

In the scenario where a building is leased to one or more tenants, a roof rental product can be structure to provide an incentive to the landlord for the solar system to be installed. Shopping Centres, Business Parks, & Industrial Sheds are well suited for this product.

Tenants will receive lower cost electricity while at the site and the building owner will receive a new income stream, and possible improvements on the buildings sustainability ratings.

Microgrids

A microgrid is a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. A microgrid can connect and disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected or island-mode.

A microgrid is alocalised energy network operating on its own or while connected to the main electricity grid. It can power a small number of houses or buildings using energy generated and stored locally.

A microgrid is a subset of the broader electricity network with all the necessary components to operate independently. Microgrids are typically developed for three main reasons – energy security, cost savings and sustainability. The environmental appeal is it can be ‘off the grid’ and largely run on renewable energy, enabling community power needs to be met by local generation.

Microgrids have lower energy transmission losses because the electricity is consumed closer to where it is generated.
